Barathaven Alzheimer's Special Care Center has been a part of the St. Charles County Community since 2010. Our leadership and caregiving staff have longevity within the Community of up to 12 years - Barathaven has been named one of the "Best Places to Work" for 2021. We have found that our caregivers have the best responses and compassion to care for our residents with dementia at Barathaven, therefore we do not use agency staffing. Our staff has a collective average of 22+ years caring for residents with dementia. Our Community is designed purposefully for those who wander as part of their disease process. Barathaven is secured with resident accessible outdoor patio space that is also secured. We have Award winning SPARK Montessori programming through Frontier Management, which capitalizes on each resident's strengths. Barathaven has a warm and cozy home-like feel that is sure to bring your loved one comfort to age gracefully in place to our licensure level.

  • Their reputation was so good. Disappointed that we had such a terrible experience.

One question I wish had asked is how they handle dementia-related behavioral problems. They have a three strikes and you're out policy, so just be aware of that. Their idea of dealing with things was putting my loved one in a psych ward and increasing his meds. In looking for a new place, they would ask why we were moving. And once I told them, no one wanted to take him, which put me in a really difficult spot. It was a horrible situation all around.

  • Poor Experience for Us

My loved one needed care, assistance, and help. We were under the influence and impression that our loved one would be getting the help. The staff and community gave our loved one the bare minimum. Due to COVID protocols, we were unable to know exactly how our loved one was being cared for. The only way we were able to see our loved one was looking in a window to visit them. The next time, we saw our loved one our loved one was very weak since they weren't eating, and we saw our loved one via a plexiglass divider. The staff never should have put our loved one in a wheelchair to see us due to being so weak. The staff allowed us to go see our loved one near the end of their life. As the family was visiting we could tell our loved one was not comfortable and seemed to be in pain. The staff never took care of my loved one's pain. Our family have some painful memories of seeing our loved one being uncomfortable. The person at the font desk was very kind and welcoming. I would never recommend this community to others.

  • Grateful for Barathaven

Barathaven is a wonderful community. I am confident our loved one’s needs are being met with genuine care and attention. The staff is personable and professional, available for questions and guidance, and bring calm and joy to life with dementia / Alzheimer’s. The facility is clean, well-maintained, and intentionally designed with the needs of the residents in mind. For example, residents who like to move have a never-ending hallway to walk. A beautiful courtyard in the middle of the facility invites residents to enjoy the outdoors safely. Displays of toys, gadgets, books, pictures, and other items from different eras help prompt positive memories for residents and guests. I’m grateful we found this community for our loved one and I am happy to recommend it to others.
