  • Everything is not as it appears - I was very disappointed

What they say you're going to get at the beginning is totally different than what you do get once you move in. My loved one is not mobile, and they were supposed to put her into bed every night. One night they left her up all night, and she then ended up going to the ER because her blood pressure dropped so much, and she became unconscious. The phone is usually right by her, so she called me three times to tell me that they still hadn't put her to bed. So I called and I called and I called, and kept going to voicemail. Finally someone answered and said she would put her to bed right now. Instead of transferring my loved one to the bed, she left her in her wheelchair and laid a pillow on the bed for her to lay her head on, and she moved the phone so my loved one couldn't call me. The paramedics came and got her, took her to the hospital, and they found open skin, like a diaper rash. So Azpira Place was not changing her on the routine they said they were and that they were supposed to be. From the hospital, she went to a rehab center, and now she's home with me with home health care. Because of our experience at Azpira Place, I'm having a hard time trusting putting her anywhere else. Their lack of concern from the director and VP was disappointing. They promised they would call me and they still never have. My initial impression of the facility was that it looked fine. I could smell urine when I would come in sometimes, but things looked clean enough. Certain staff were awesome and would call me on a regular basis. But when the incident happened, it all shifted. And now no one will speak to me, and nobody has called me back.

  • Our experience in a community during Covid

A lot has been difficult due to Covid. I would think it would be a very pleasant, positive experience with Covid restrictions being opened up. I just don't know how long that process will take. They only just last week opened up to any visitors. They have you put on protective garb and limit visits to 30 minutes. That protocol can be intimidating when you come to visit. From what I've seen after my recent visit, I was very impressed. All the areas I saw were very clean, from the front door to my loved one's room. The building itself was nice. They have been pretty tight with Covid restrictions. Because they were sticking to the rules and regulations, they didn't have cases where people got sick. So those rules kept them safe, but they also kept the residents isolated. Friendship and fellowship I know is part of what's missing, but that would be the case anywhere you go. I've had limited interactions with the staff, but the phone conversations I've had with them have been fine. Because of Covid, I would say the care has suffered a little. They come and go and do what needs to be done, but they don't linger, which would be helpful sometimes. The staff have been very friendly and helpful, but I believe they are short staffed due to Covid. Initially our family was very pleased with the food, but there's been a change in their nutritionist. Our loved one has some difficulty chewing, and they've been working very hard to help find her food that she can chew and eat. Meals are still being delivered to the residents' rooms at this time. They have had some limited activities going on. We've had a PT and OT come in with outside services, and that has seemed to work well and benefit her well. We found that very helpful to supplement the care she's receiving at Azpira Place. She had a unique experience entering the community being in a wheelchair for the first time, which is a huge adjustment. And I think there were many people there who all came together and did their part to help meet her needs and help with that transition.

  • Azpira Place is a great place for your loved one to have the highest possible quality of life & have their needs met

We've been really, really happy here. Every single staff member we've run into has been very caring and compassionate. And they've been very patient with my loved one. I've seen that extended to other residents there as well. And that's been huge for us. They've also been really great at communication with my sisters and I about anything that comes up. They are constantly cleaning and disinfecting everting. They use the most stringent protection protocols. Everything looks new and well cared for, and you don't see stains or anything like that. Some of the activities they talked about doing, they've not been doing. But that's definitely due to Covid.
