  • Mom is Living The Luxury Cruise Ship Life

Atria Sugar Land is amazing. The only experience I can compare it to would be like vacations our family has taken on luxury cruise ships. Only this ship stays in port where the language and places are familiar so mom knows where to shop and where to eat out if she prefers. We chose Atria Sugar Land because my 86-year-old mom is young at heart. She has been extremely independent with driving, shopping, helping others who lived around her, doing her laundry, ironing, sewing, and cleaning the interior and exterior of her townhome. She has not needed assistance in the past. This year proved to be a challenge. Health issues prevailed. We needed to find a place that would assist mom in a few daily tasks and a place she would like. While she was in the hospital, I set appointments and visited all the assisted living facilities in our area. Many were nice and had a lot of what we were looking for, however, they each had different things we felt were not the best fit for mom. It is extremely important that she live a respected and dignified life even though she is struggling with a few of her daily tasks. What we found in Atria Sugar Land was ideal. Atria Sugar Land is a smaller community, the staff is upbeat, young-ish, friendly, and make sure the residents feel respected, cared for, and part of a community. They are not hovering over the residents with straight faces. They have wonderful, genuinely caring personalities. You can see they are happy to be there and happy to assist. They build the residents self-confidence and have positive attitudes. Because of the staff's positive attitudes, the residents are happy and have positive attitudes. It is not unusual to walk up to the front door of the community and to be greeted by a resident who is sitting in one of the comfy rocking chairs under gently whirling ceiling fans. When you walk into the lobby you are greeted by a person at the desk who knows you and your parents. Residents are walking around getting an ice tea or a fountain drink in the dining room, checking their mail or on their way to a fun activity or to get a little exercise. The only experience I can compare it a luxury cruise ship. Smiling staff ready to have a good time and make sure you are having your needs met while on the ship. Passengers/residents can join others in the dining room or have the friendliest wait person deliver the meals to their room with a smile. No tipping allowed. The front desk or waitstaff will assist you when select from the pre-planned options for your meals and guide you to what will best suit your tastebuds each week. Passengers/residents have daily activities, experientials to choose from. The activities range from yoga, chair exercise, brewing hops, listening to live performers, chief led experiences, planter gardening, reading in one of the two libraries, gathering to watch movies or television events, bingo, and crafts to name a few. Passengers/residents can arrange for a driver and sign up to join others on excursions. Passengers/residents can always opt for a day of relaxing with a good book or binge-watching TV if they prefer. Atria Sugar Land checked all of the boxes for us. Mom enjoys living the luxury cruise ship lifestyle while also receiving some needed assistance. I feel she has her needs met which helps me relax and get back to being her daughter instead of her care giver.

  • My tour review

This community was assisted living and this tour helped show us that we did not need assisted living and that my loved one really needed independent living.

  • Great place for moderate care needs.

Warm, caring staff make sure your loved one is well cared for. There are lots of activities. Food is OK. Rooms are nice and are renovated when turned. A bit more expensive than others in the market, but worth it for the staff attention. No 2 attendant transfers. Memory care residents are allowed.
