for a local A Place for Mom advisor

Bloom at Belfair is a family-owned and operated independent living, independent living plus and memory care establishment. Since 1965, our goal has been simple yet aspirational: to help our residents flourish. Entering a Bloom community does not mean checking your lifestyle or personality at the door. Residents continue to live life to its fullest potential, enjoying their favorite activities while discovering new ones, and blooming into their best selves through growth and discovery.
Bloom's memory care has the distinct honor of receiving a perfect rating and 'Deficiency Free Survey' from the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control. The program is uniquely designed featuring interactive neighborhoods situated around Town Square with working 'Life Skills Stores' (i.e general store, old-fashioned ice cream parlor, book nook, art center, hobby shop, post office, barber shop, news stand, toy store, candy shop and vintage sporting goods store). Open to residents 24 hours a day, Town Square represents Main Street America reminiscent of the early 1940's developed to bring back long-term memories and ensure residents relate to familiar settings from their yesteryear. Main Street opens into outdoor courtyards complete with putting greens, dog parks and shuffleboard courts.
Bloom's personalized service and superior care enable residents to enjoy the privacy of home, combined with the security and convenience of assistance and a maintenance-free environment. This is provided in a vibrant and intimate setting, located on a private, 6-acre plot in the heart of Bluffton, South Carolina.

  • Room for improvement in family engagement, but overall a good place.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, especially if it's your first time going down this road. If I had a second go-around, I would have more specific follow-up questions after their general presentation. For example, do they have a la carte care services you can add on, manicure/pedicure, etc. The term "all-inclusive" includes only what they provide, not necessarily what you would like to see them provide. Middle management has been very cooperative, supportive and understanding, and very much in compliance. They're very receptive if you contact them with a concern. The caregivers, it depends. Some are exceptionally good, and some just do their job. But I recognize that it's a very difficult job to do, and I have tremendous empathy for them. I think the staff to resident ratio is unrealistic, even though theirs is better than the minimum required ratio. I haven't tasted the food, but it appears to be well presented, and I see no issue with portions or things of that nature. They have weekly off-campus bus trips where they go out to lunch or visit museums and a variety of places. I would like to see them do more of that, but they seem to keep the residents pretty well engaged. I just wish that some of the field trips weren't at an additional charge but instead were included in the monthly fee as part of the services. The value is good, but I would pay even more for them to do more.

  • Bloom is an independent living facility. It is older but has lots of spaces for gathering. The front porch has rockers to sit in.

  • The rating might be unfair as we really didn’t get to see the facility first hand . However a video tour was sent to us. We felt the facility was very Outdated, but from what we could see clean. Several interesting items like an ice cream pallor and a vintage Ny taxi cab were displayed inside the facility along with a fountain in the atrium entrance with an expansive staircase behind it ??? Maybe it’s us but stairs and older people usually don’t mix well. [Name removed] the community relations manager was lovely and very helpful.
