Canterbury Village is a not-for-profit assisted living community in West Orange, New Jersey. We are celebrating 100 years of gracious and affordable senior living. Since 1921, it has been our mission to provide residents and their families peace of mind — in knowing we deeply respect our aging community and believe they should be cared for with respect. We offer living accommodations, professional care, and essential services, making Canterbury an ideal home for your retirement.

West Orange, New Jersey is a quaint, charming town, filled with nature and unique attractions. It’s simply a great place for seniors to retire. Residents and their loved ones delight in various attractions about town, like paddle boating or enjoying historical sites at Thomas Edison National Historical Park.

Community Amenities

On-campus, our community enjoys a variety of common areas, living amenities, and care services provided regularly. We serve three meals daily in our intimate dining rooms, offer a diverse calendar filled with social and physical activities that promote overall well-being, and much more.

All residents are monitored by a professional nurse to help ensure any ongoing medical needs are addressed. Our professional team develops individual care plans for each resident, so they’re unique needs are accounted for. Our community staff and health care staff are available 24-7 to accommodate whenever needed.

Living Options

We currently offer private and semi-private units. All of our units feature individually controlled heating and air conditioning, individual basic cable, and emergency response systems to notify staff of any time-sensitive needs. Residents can enjoy their day without regard to chores or maintenance, as we also provide housekeeping and laundry services.

  • A Perfect Place I Would Put My Mother

    The community was clean anytime we would go see my loved one. The community was extremely friendly from the administration down to the janitor. Everyone was always smiling and always asking what they could do to help.

  • Art was terrific. The facility was dark and a bit tired. Rooms were very small. It is not in a good location for me either.

  • Canterbury is simply wonderful

    Canterbury Village not only saved my mother, but me as well. After a terrible, dehumanizing experience at an unsafe, unsound non-profit facility in Somerset, my mother’s life turned around at Canterbury. The Canterbury staff is kind and compassionate, the directors and nurses are attentive to the residents’ needs and medications (with wise suggestions too) and I have watched my mother thrive there. It’s a clean, cozy, and cheery place - not institutional or bleak. Residents with dementia are given freedom and respect; there is never a sense of this being a locked facility, but a sprawling apartment complex or shared home with gardens and good meals (and a therapy dog too!) Staff turnover seems very low, so the residents and families really bond with everyone there. I just can’t overemphasize how wonderful Canterbury has been for my mom - it is a wonderful place. I am so grateful to everyone there
