for a local A Place for Mom advisor
Although the Lodge is cleaned and maintained to a high standard, it is an older building (completed in 1986) that is not full of the marble, brass, and hardwood that usually put the newer buildings in the city far out of reach for seniors with more modest incomes.
Our Experienced and Knowledgeable Staff:
We encourage prospective residents and their families to realize, however, that moving to a retirement home involves far more than acquiring new real estate. Over time, the care and services offered by the facility are likely to impact the comfort and well-being of the resident far more than the physical surroundings. The five senior staff of Blackburn Lodge (Executive Director, Director of Care, Dining Room Manager, Head Housekeeper and Activity Director) have a total of 75 years of experience behind them serving seniors in retirement homes. In addition, our core group of front-line staff have been been with us for more than 6 years on average. Three of our nursing department staff are MD's having received their medical training in Russia, the Philippines, and India. But for the backward policies of the Canadian Medical Association, they would be practising medicine. We are proud that their expertise and experience is available to our residents.
Our Reputation
Most of our clients come through word of mouth. We are a highly respected resource for seniors in our community. In 2010 we received Honour Roll Status with the Better Business Bureau for achieving 10 years without a complaint and that number is rapidly approaching 15 years.
Our Community
Blackburn Lodge is located on a quiet street across from a picturesque little park in the residential community of Blackburn Hamlet. Blackburn Hamlet combines the convenience of a location which is only 15 minutes from downtown Ottawa and next door to the bustling east end business centre of Orleans, with the tranquility of a setting in the heart of the Greenbelt. Within the Hamlet itself residents will find 2 banks, a pharmacy, a supermarket, a dollar store and other businesses for their immediate shopping needs. Larger plazas are a short distance away by bus or in the Blackburn Lodge van.
Our Building and Grounds
As a small retirement community of only 54 units, the Lodge offers the close family atmosphere that is often missing from the larger and more impersonal buildings. Yet despite its small sizeand moderate pricing you will find most of the essential services of the larger buildings. Outside there are convenient sitting areas, a patio, stand-up gardening boxes, quiet streets for walking, a nice park, and ample parking. Within the building you will find a pleasant dining room, front lounge, multi-purpose activity room, chapel, hairdressing salon, library, shuffleboard table, and several small lounges. Rooms and apartments in five different size categories offer as little or as much space as you chose, all at prices below the competition.
Our standard prices include accommodation, 3 meals and snacks, daily and weekly housekeeping, personal laundry service, activities and the basic level of nursing care. The basic level of nursing care includes emergency response, temporary illness care, medication ordering, and consultation with our visiting physician or Director of Care as needed. As your care needs progress, you can add (at moderate prices) full medication service, bathing assistance or various kinds of personal assistance.
Our senior staff team (Dave, Sanjee, Shawna, Lorraine and Jude) look forward to meeting you.
