  • Sudden development of presume sores cuts Respite stay short - lack of equipment

My wife recently stayed at Errinrung for a two week respite stay, my first break in providing care in two years. I completed all the paper work, ensured that CCAC and family doctor had sent detailed health information concerning my wife's spinal cord injury and special requirements. I was assured by the nursing team, following a detailed review of her requirements, that they understood these requirements! My wife's stay was cut short when a visitor (not the nursing team) discovered she developed horrific pressure sores as a result of neglect and lack of equipment. At no time was I contacted by the home or director of care prior to early discharge or post discharge to check on her condition. This is the only skin issue since my wife's injury; she now requires rotation every 3-4 hours, additional nursing visits, and will be unable to sit in her wheel chair into the New Year. The director of care would have been fully aware of the situation through CCAS and early discharge. Home lacks equipment to provide a safe environment for persons suffering a spinal injury.

  • A restful respite stay

I took two weeks of respite to recover from knee surgery. I found that the staff was very helpful, willing to go the extra mile at every turn. There were two well appointed lounge areas with large screen TVs and two all day snack stations where coffee, tea, and assorted snacks including fresh fruit were always on hand. Rooms are adequate, of medium size with bathroom with shower. For those who need assistance with bathing there is a "Spa room" where there is a large shower with seat and, as well, a jet tub with drop down side for ease of entry and exit. The Spa can be used by anyone at times when assisted bathing is not going on. Meal times are 8am/12 noon/ and 5 pm. breakfast seating is not reserved, other meals have assigned seating. I was assigned to eat with three gentlemen of varying ages. conversations were always interesting and informative. There is a lot of choice for breakfast usually juice, hot or cold cereal, eggs, and toast. For lunch and supper residents are provided with two choices which are ordered a day in advance. Meals were varied and usually very tasty. Often there was a choice between a meat dish and fish, salad, or pasta. Soup was served four or five times a week, sometimes at lunch, other times at dinner. There were always choices between two kinds of desserts. A recent once a month residents' council meeting has successfully asked for pie as a choice at least three times a week. My two week stay worked out very well for me and went beyond my expectations.

  • Moms respite

I toured the facility before Moms respite . We were able to choose her room which was based on her needs. It turned out to be a great choice. Mom was very comfortable & was made to feel right at home. She loved that one of the lounges was close to her room. She could make coffee & treat herself to fresh fruit or baked goods as she wished. Having her own bathroom was a bonus & the staff helped her bath in the large spa room which included a walk in tub. At least two activities were offered during Moms one week stay. A strawberry social & a sing along outside in the yard. The ding room offered a choice of entree for all three sit down meals & staff were there to help as needed. All in all it was Moms first experience in a retirement home & it was a positive one for sure.
