Birchwoods at Canco Assisted Living located in beautiful Portland, Maine, combines the care seniors need, the convenience they value, and the independence they cherish.

Birchwoods at Canco is beautifully designed with spacious common areas to enjoy with family and friends. Our gracious dining room features three delicious, chef-prepared meals daily, served by a cheerful and friendly staff. Caring on site staff are available day and night and a safety call system is in every suite. Additional amenities include maintenance and housekeeping services, scheduled transportation to and from appointments and shopping, and weekly linen service.

At Birchwoods, we promote an active adult lifestyle by offering a variety of intellectual, cultural, and recreational activities including an exciting wellness and fitness program, creative writing classes, gardening and book clubs, table games, and planned outings to go shopping, visit museums and galleries, or take in concerts and theatre performances. We often have live entertainers visit at Birchwoods for everyone to enjoy, and weekly movies are shown on our wide-screen TV with refreshments included.

Health and personal care services at Birchwoods at Canco are coordinated by our full-time Registered Nurse.

  • Met with [name removed]. Easy to find. Outside, plenty of parking, grounds well maintained. undergoing renovations. [name removed] very energetic and helpful in answering concerns with my loved one. Weekly housekeeping, & linen service social and recreational activities, Pharmacy i house for medication management. Walking path for organized walking club; 90 day trial period for loved one. Facility is far back from road, which is an industrial park, for CMP et al, so very little traffic. this facility a possibility

    I was very happy with Birchwoods. The staff was wonderful to my loved one. They knew her, and they interacted with her. They were very positive, and she enjoyed her interactions with them. They were just wonderful. Communication was very good. I'd call to check in on what was going on, and they kept me informed as to what was happening. The common areas were clean, and I always saw people going though cleaning. They were always in my loved one's apartment cleaning every day. She wasn't thrilled with the food, but she was used to cooking for herself for so long. But all the food I saw looked good. There were limited activities due to Covid, but I saw that they did what they could when they were able to . The activities directors were very pleasant, and they got to know the residents, even if they couldn't offer all the activities they wanted to do. And the little bit my loved one was able to participate in, she enjoyed.
