Located in the historic district of Topsham, Maine, tucked among magnificently landscaped grounds, stands The Highlands — an exceptional community offering estate homes, independent living, assisted living, and memory care services. The Highlands covers 75 acres of land and offers six different types of pet-friendly living options. We believe that it is our duty to cater to your unique needs and lifestyle, and with amenities like our on-site medical center, indoor heated saltwater pool, and spacious movie theatre, we’re confident we won’t only meet all your expectations but exceed them.

All our living options are specially designed to cater to different types of lifestyles. We understand that no two people need the same level of care, which is why we offer a continuum of care options. Based on your current needs and desires, you and your family members can decide which part of our community best caters to your lifestyle.

Community Amenities and Services

For those looking for more freedom and independence, we provide services designed to make life easier. Our friendly associates provide regular housekeeping and maintenance services, so residents can focus on spending more time and energy doing the things they love most, like visiting family, participating in activities, and exploring the greater community. Shoveling snow is a thing of the past!

For residents in need of more assistance, we offer 24/7 assisted living and memory care services. Our specially trained caregivers provide personalized care services as well as medication management. In our secured memory care community — Governor King — we provide residents living with Alzhiemer’s and other dementia-related conditions a more intimate environment specially designed to minimize excess stimulation. We also use sensory cues and landmarks to help residents maintain some independence. Our caregivers work to form personal connections with each resident with our innovative Village Program and It’s Never 2 Late technology. All of our memory care features are designed to ease residents' stress and help them participate in activities without getting frustrated.

At The Highlands, we offer flexible, anytime dining options, enabling residents to continue living independently without worrying about missing out on the nutritious and savory meals prepared daily by our professional chef. Even more, with our robust life enrichment program, residents can stay mentally, physically, and socially active without having to venture off-site. We coordinate a variety of activities ranging from fitness lessons to lifelong learning seminars and even weekly happy hours. There’s something new taking place every day, giving residents numerous opportunities to expand their horizons and form new friendships within the community.

Living Arrangements

For residents looking at independent living options, we offer a variety of options. Choose between the Main Lodge, Topsham Town Hall townhomes, Estate Homes, or our Cooperative Apartment Homes. There are several different floor plans, ranging from one-bedroom to two-bedroom units for each location. All units include full kitchens, spacious living areas, and exterior maintenance and groundskeeping services.

Our assisted living options include the Cadigan Lodge and Friendship Cove living spaces. Both include one-bedroom apartments, with large living rooms and full kitchens with plenty of counter space. You’ll have plenty of room to relax and enjoy your own company after a long day.

Governor King memory care offers studio and one-bedroom floor plans. Both options are wheelchair accessible and include a private bathroom with safety features installed for your convenience. Feel free to bring little touches from home along with you to make the space your own.

  • my review of The Highlands

The staff is very friendly and helpful. They go above and beyond for the residents and they have lots of activities available for the residents. They gear the activities towards each resident and they even have field trips. I would recommend this community to others based on my experience.

  • My review of The Highlands

The Highlands has been wonderful. They helped with the move and are working very hard to get our loved one settled and comfortable. They are doing a great job keeping us informed even with the Covid restrictions.

  • I spoke to [name removed] at the Highlands and she was beyond sweet! We were going to do a virtual tour and go from there. They called me the next day and said they feel they don't have the level of care needed for my Mom and apologized over and over. I wish we could of met them before this decision was made.I think maybe I represented Mom to be worse than she is. They had told me in a previous conversation that they had 6 levels of care, I believe. I thought this was going to be a good fit. >> My Feedback: I think anyone looking to place a loved one, this would be a great place for them to go. I just think maybe it may be more of an assisted living facility or just above that level. I'm not sure because we never got to zoom so I could see exactly the kind of care they offer.
